APE Day 1
This year's Alternative Press Expo began yesterday afternoon, with, not so much a Bang, as a... trickle. But by mid-afternoon, it was quite crowded and that was fun. We are in the lower center section this year, for the first time, and I definitely like the foot traffic here better. We're cuddled next to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, so we're easy to find.

Ray and I were the booth staff yesterday, and we were joined by a dear friend who is one of the models in Issue 7. If you stop by and someone is there with a camera, that is he. Please let him take your pic so we can add it to our photo journal.

After the convention, we went off to dinner. Some yummy Italian place across the street from Absynthe. Then we skipped over to the Isotope party. We got there "early" so we could still move around the joint and not have to stand by the door for air. That was nice. Then we ran off home for a relatively early night to re-energize for today's festivities.

What I mainly learned yesterday is the SuperCon is going to be a great time and SiliCon is going to be a riot, especially with the Formal Ball, Live Rocky Horror show and a panel by us on something having to do with Dorothy and self-publishing. Still gotta work out those details. If you are in, on or around San Jose, or can be so, you have 2 great reasons to travel thither this Summer and Fall.

Oh, and we also confirmed that Mark Masterson will be signing at The Comic Bug in Manhattan Beach on Free Comic Book Day from 11-3. If you can't make it out, check out the FCBD locator to find events and free comics near you!

Pics shall be forth coming for APE. Stay tuned...

The Evil Queen has new intel and moves on her plan. Her subordinates are beginning to squabble as it becomes apparent she just needs loyal "dogs" and not necessarily commanders. Meanwhile, Dorothy and friends survive are trying to stay far ahead of the nasty monster on their tails when they get caught in a huge wind storm. Surviving that, they are met with a scary-looking monster (part reptile, part mammal, part killer machine), but he's afraid of everything!

The story has picked back up with a flourish of activity. The Evil Queen definitely comes off as very scary and possibly a little mad. She's tired of waiting and now she's ready to strike! I'm dying to know what plan she has up her wicked sleeve. The cowardly beast reminds me a little of the Aguas from The Life & Adventures of Santa Claus - evil and repulsive - and yet the blue eyes betray a little of his inner self. He's so outrageous, he works perfectly into this odd little group. The cover is really excellent as the shadowy form of some monster covers fragmented pieces of a person's face - frightful and intriguing! And if you haven't been checking Dorothy out here's two good reasons why you should: 1) it's a truly unique and captivating take on The Wizard of Oz and 2) the art is a mix of photographs of the real people portraying characters mixed with hand-drawn and CG which enhances the feeling of Dorothy's not being "in Kansas anymore". Sometimes the faces or poses are a little weird and sometimes the blending of styles isn't in synch 100% but it's a new and different way of doing things, and the result is a story well worth the $5 price tag.
